He Let My Sister Die, So I Ended His Bloodline novel · Chapter 8 of 24

Chapter 8: Not Tonight

Peyton lunged across the desk for the letter.

Ronan's wolf caught her by the wrist before her fingers touched the paper.

"Don't," he said.

"That's a confidential pack record!" Her voice cracked high.

"It's my sister's file."

"It's pack property. You're stealing it."

"Then arrest me."

I folded the page in half and put it inside my jacket.

All three clerks were watching, and none of them pretended not to.

"Who was the donor?" I said.

"He refused."

She said it fast, and her breathing was loud in the quiet room.

"The donor refused at the last minute. He was frightened of the surgery. I sealed his name to protect him, and I crossed out the line because it was no longer true."

"Who?"

"I'm not at liberty to say."

"Then the council will ask you. In Austin, in eight days, under oath."

Her face emptied.

For one moment the warm, friendly woman who had made me tea was gone, and what stood in her place was a stranger with hard flat eyes.

Then it was gone too, and she was crying again.

"I'm only trying to protect this pack," she said, to the clerks, to anyone.

None of them answered her.

I picked up the duffel and walked out.

Behind me, I heard the young clerk say, quietly, "Ms. Goelet, I think you should sit down."

We did not go back to Texas that night.

Ronan booked two rooms in a hotel by the airport, with a door between them.

I took the duffel up and sat on the edge of the bed in the dark, holding Cara's green sweater in my lap.

It smelled like her.

I didn't cry in the office, and I didn't cry in the hallway.
