Chapter 26: Reconciliation
Gina grabbed my wrist so hard her nails went in.
"Is that her?"
"That's her."
On the stage, a big, pink, happy man was shaking Holden's hand with both of his.
His wife stood a step behind him with the boy on her hip.
She was looking out into the dark of the hall, row by row.
A stagehand gave the husband a microphone. Holden kept his own, the little one along his jaw.
"Tell everybody what EvenUp means to your family," Holden said.
"Honestly? Everything," the husband said. "Before, we fought about money every week. Now it's six o'clock, it's settled, it's done. No arguments. We've never missed a reconciliation. Not once."
Applause.
"Not once. Even the day this guy was born."
Holden laughed warmly. "Now that's commitment."
The wife reached over and took the microphone out of her husband's hand.
"Can I tell them about that day?" she said.
Holden spread his hands. "Please."
"I was in labor," she said.
Her voice was small in the microphone, and then it wasn't.
"I owed sixty-two dollars. My card froze at six, and admissions wouldn't take me."
