Chapter 22: Play It Loud

"She had a hard birth and a baby in the NICU, and her marriage fell apart," Carol told the room, in her softest voice. "She hasn't been herself since. Please, be gentle with her."

A few people nodded.

I saw an old man at the second table reach for his wife's hand.

For a moment I thought she might win it, as she had won every room for twenty years.

Then a chair scraped at the back.

The woman from room four stood up in her one good dress.

"I'm not unwell," she said, "but I'd like to talk about someone who was."

Her voice carried without a microphone.

Carol's smile went stiff.

"I'm sorry, dear. I don't think we've met."

"We have." The woman walked down the aisle between the tables. "I kept the Fund's first books when I was seventeen. You said I stole eighty thousand dollars. You said nobody would believe me."

"This woman is confused-"

"You wrote it on a card." She held up a small yellow rectangle, soft at the edges. "She will not be believed."

I looked at Carol's face, and it was the first time I'd ever seen it with nothing arranged on it.

The whole room saw it.

"Play it," I said, and nodded to the sound booth.

Sheldon's technician hit a key.

Carol's own voice rolled out of the ceiling speakers, warm and unhurried.

"I picked you because you were a girl with nobody to call."

Someone gasped.

"I picked you the day you came to us. He needed a wife who'd never doubt me, and I needed one nobody would believe."

Carol stood frozen at the podium.

"Fifty thousand. A hardship grant, out of the Fund. Nobody will ever ask where it came from."
