Chapter 12: The Pink Slip

The ballroom made a sound I'd never heard before.

It was two hundred people talking at once, and every voice was angry.

"He took it all?"

"For her? She's not even sick!"

"Mr. Garner," the board chair said from the foot of the stage, and the room dropped quiet again. "Please take off the medal."

Neil's hand went to his chest.

"This is a misunderstanding."

"The foundation's Donor of the Year award is withdrawn, effective now," she said. "The hospital will also review every transfer order issued by your office this year."

"You can't..."

"Two of the Garner Group directors are in this room," she said. "Look at them."

Neil looked.

At the second table a man in a gray tuxedo stood up and buttoned his jacket.

He didn't say anything to Neil.

He walked out, and the man beside him followed.

Neil lifted the medal off over his head with both hands.

He set it on the lectern.

"Kirsten," he said, low.

The front row was empty.

Kirsten Lowe had slipped out during the cardiologist's examination, and her pale gray dress was already gone through the back door.

Marjorie stood alone at the table with her pearls in her fist.

"You vicious little thing," she told me.

I handed the microphone back to the board chair, and my hand was steady.

Then I walked off the stage and straight into the corridor, because I couldn't see.

I made it to the ladies' room before my knees gave out.

I stood at the sink with both hands on the marble and looked at my own white face in the mirror.
