Chapter 18: Kirsten Tells It All

Kirsten's voice shook, but she did not stop.

"That recording is only part of it," she said. "There's the blood."

"Go on," the judge said.

"On the morning of the crash, Mr. Garner told me to say I was anemic. He wrote down the exact words for me to say to the blood bank."

"Objection," Neil's lawyer said weakly.

"Overruled."

"I was in his office when Mrs. Garner called," Kirsten said. "It rang and rang. He looked at the screen and turned the phone face down."

I didn't move.

"He said, Let her ring. She's jealous. She'll use anything."

A sound went through the benches.

"How many times did she call?" the judge said.

"I stopped counting at twenty. I counted because I was frightened." Kirsten's eyes were streaming. "At the end he turned the ringer off and took me to lunch."

Behind me the nurse said something low and furious.

I didn't turn around.

"Ms. Lowe, is there anything else?" the judge said.

"Yes." Kirsten bent and lifted a canvas bag from beside the stand. "These are the statements for the shell account. I made copies six years ago, in case he ever tried to put it on me."

She handed the bag to the clerk.

Neil stood up so fast his chair fell.

"She's lying! She's been coached! Kirsten, sit down!"

"Mr. Garner," the judge said.

"Draper paid her! Look at that sweater!"

"Mr. Garner, sit."

He did not sit.

"Mother," he said. "Tell them."

Marjorie opened her mouth, and no sound came.

The judge picked up her pen.

"Petition denied," she said. "Consent for the child's treatment is restored to the mother. Mr. Garner's contact with the child is suspended pending investigation. I am referring this record to the district attorney, and I am directing the court officer to detain both Mr. Garner and his mother until a detective has spoken with them."
