Chapter 22: The Rourke Wing
Penelope's POV
They hung my father's name on the third floor of Slenale Memorial on a bright Saturday in November.
The old cardiac wing had been gutted and rebuilt.
It had new glass, new floors, a waiting room with soft chairs and a window that looked out on trees instead of a parking lot.
Two hundred people stood in the corridor.
I stood at the front in a cream suit with a cane, because my leg still would not carry me for long.
Cillian was at my right.
Hattie stood at my left on her own two feet, with Biscuit, her rabbit, under her arm.
The board chair, the white-haired woman who had handed me the microphone at the gala, cleared her throat at the lectern.
"Six years ago this hospital failed a man in this very hall," she said. "We failed him, and then we looked away."
The corridor went quiet.
"This board has voted to remove every member who sat in this room that night and to open our records to the district attorney. We can't give his daughter back her father. We can say his name where every patient will read it."
She pulled the cord.
A cloth fell from the wall.
The plaque was dark bronze.
THE ROURKE CARDIAC WING, it said. In memory of a man who kept his promises.
Below that, in smaller letters, the hospital had added a line I hadn't asked for.
No team is ever reassigned from a patient in this wing.
I put my hand over my mouth.
Cillian's fingers closed around mine.
The board chair held out the microphone.
"Mrs. Draper?"
I took it.
My hand shook, but my voice didn't.
"My father was a quiet man," I said. "He signed guarantees for strangers, and he took in a nineteen-year-old with nothing and gave him a seat at his table."
