Chapter 19: Fireworks

The first firework went up over the rooftops of Hone Avenue while I was sitting on the arm of the couch with my knees apart.

It burst red and gold in the front window and lit the whole room for a moment, and I saw his face.

He was in the armchair six feet away, in his jeans and his bare feet, with his hands behind his head.

I had put them there.

"Don't move them," I said.

"I won't."

"Not when I tell you to," I said.

"Not until you tell me."

I wore his white undershirt and nothing else.

The window was open, and the night was hot and loud with firecrackers, and somewhere down the block a radio played a salsa station.

I held the small purple vibrator in my lap.

I had bought it on Pelham Parkway on Tuesday in a paper bag, with the pharmacy clerk looking at the ceiling.

I had not told him.

I turned it on.

The hum was low and steady, and I saw him hear it.

His eyes dropped to my hand.

"What's that?" he said, rough.

"A present."

"For who?"

"For me," I said. "You're here to watch."

His breath went out of him.

He did not move.

I pulled the undershirt up to my waist.

I was bare and open to the window and to him, and the next firework went up green and showed him everything.

I put the head of the vibrator against my thigh and drew it up the inside of my leg.

It buzzed against my skin, and I shivered.

"Drita."

"Quiet."

I drew it higher and rested the tip against my clit.

The first touch was a jolt of such clean bright pleasure that I cried out.

I leaned back on my elbows with the toy buzzing against me and my head tipped back.

"Oh, that's," I said. "Oh, God."

"Look at me," he said, hoarse.

I looked.

He was gripping the back of his own head with white knuckles.
