Chapter 7: The Second Waiting Room
I ran from the parking garage to the emergency room in my work shoes, and Sam Chaffee was standing at the double doors waiting for me.
He caught me by both shoulders before I got past him.
"She's awake," he said. "Her heart went into an irregular rhythm when she got upset. It's treatable and she's stable. She's asking for you and for a sandwich."
My knees went.
He didn't make a speech. He put one arm around my back and walked me to a plastic chair against the wall, and I sat down.
"Breathe out slowly," he said.
I tried.
"Your hands are shaking."
"I'm fine."
"You're not, and that's all right." He crouched in front of me, took my left wrist and set two fingers across it.
His hand was warm and dry, with a callus on the side of the thumb.
I watched his face while he checked my pulse.
He had a plain, serious mouth and a small cut on his chin from shaving too fast.
"One twenty," he said quietly.
"Is that bad?"
"It's what you'd expect from someone who ran across a parking garage."
He kept checking.
He had said a minute was enough, but the minute passed, and his fingers stayed where they were.
I felt his own pulse in his thumb, against the inside of my wrist.
It was fast.
He had probably drunk too much coffee.
"You can let go," I said.
"I know."
He didn't, for another long moment, and then he did.
"Three weeks ago, you sat in the waiting room upstairs," he said. "I came out after the surgery and found you with a cold coffee in your hands."
