Chapter 9: Who Paid the Officiant

"I'm sorry," Margo said. "Who paid the what?"

"The man who married you at St. Brendan's," Constance said. "A retired deacon who had not performed a wedding in two years."

"Mrs. Thornbury, I'm a wedding planner. I hire officiants. That's my job."

"Fifteen thousand dollars in cash, to a deacon whose church roof leaks. The week before the wedding."

Margo's hand tightened on the chair back.

"That's called a donation."

"I had a man follow you after the engagement party," Constance said. "I paid him very well, and I told myself I was a foolish old woman. I never read his report past the third page."

"I read it last night."

The room was so quiet I could hear the clock in the hall.

"You had me followed," Margo said.

"I had you followed because I never believed a word you said about my grandson's fiancée."

"Grandma," Dawson whispered.

"Be quiet, Dawson. I'm not finished."

Constance turned her head and looked at the housekeeper still standing in the doorway.

"Who opened the front door tonight?"

The housekeeper's face crumpled.

"Mrs. Thornbury, I only told her what time dinner was. She said it was a surprise for Mr. Dawson."

"For how long?"

"Since August."

"How much?"

"Two hundred dollars a month," the woman said. "My sister's in a care home."
