Chapter 9: The Prospect
I had cut my hair to my chin on the third day, and dyed it dark brown over Greet's kitchen sink.
Now it stood out from under a Rademaker's Bait cap, and a pair of Greet's old reading glasses sat low on my nose.
I kept my hands on the counter so they would not shake.
"Nightcrawlers," I said. "Dozen or two dozen?"
"Two." The prospect looked around the shop, at the rod racks and the faded photos of men holding fish. "Slow day?"
"It's November," I said. "Nobody fishes in November except the stubborn."
He smiled politely.
I counted out the worms into a paper cup, and set it on the counter between us.
He did not pick it up.
Instead he took a phone from his jacket and held it out, screen first.
"Looking for someone," he said. "My boss's family lost touch with her. Have you seen this woman?"
It was a photo of me, from the toy-run flyer, in a red knit hat with my braid over my shoulder.
I made myself look at it for exactly as long as a stranger would.
"No," I said. "Pretty."
"She's about your age."
"Lots of women are."
Behind me the back door banged, and Greet came in with a rubber glove on one hand and her gray braid swinging.
"That a customer or a census?" she said.
"Ma'am, I'm just asking about a woman who might have come through town."
"I get four hundred women through here a summer. Most of them are looking for the bathroom." Greet took the phone from his hand and held it far from her face. "Never seen her."
