Chapter 11: Bedside
Nathaniel's POV
I drove her to the hospice myself early on the morning of Day 7, hours before the blessing.
Sylvie sat in the passenger seat with her bandaged hand in her lap and her phone switched off and left in my glove compartment.
She had barely spoken.
At a red light I put my hand over hers.
She turned her palm up and held on.
That was all, and it was more than I had expected from her that day.
The Beacon hospice was a low brick building by the river, with a garden somebody tended well.
The nurse who met us at the door looked at Sylvie with a kind of relief.
"He's been waiting," she said. "He's very weak. Please don't tire him."
Mr. Keating lay propped on pillows in a room full of cello music from a speaker.
He was a long, grey, hollowed man whose eyes were still very bright.
Gretchen's eyes.
"You're the baker," he said.
"Sylvie Callister." She took the chair beside his bed. "I'm sorry to come this way."
"Don't be sorry." His voice was a thread. "I asked for you. I need to tell you the truth before my daughter has to say it for me."
"Sir."
"I never asked for a wedding."
Sylvie did not move.
I stood by the window and watched her face.
"Three weeks ago," Mr. Keating said, "Helen Holloway sat in that chair. She had a folder. Cards. A seating chart. She said she wanted to plan something for Gretchen, in case I wasn't there. I said I wanted my daughter to be happy. She said, 'With Harrison.'"
