Chapter 22: The Key
On Thursday night, Nathaniel took me to the table.
It stood in the corner of the Sterne's restaurant, by the long front window, with a view straight across Boylston Street to the gold doors of the Grand.
A small brass stand sat in the middle of the white cloth.
The card in it said RESERVED.
"For a year," he said. "Every Saturday night. In the name of Mrs. Holloway."
"For me."
"For whoever walked out. I told myself it was spite." He took the card out of the stand and held it between two fingers. "It wasn't."
"What was it?"
"A man who wanted a reason to be ready."
He tore the card in half.
He put the pieces in his pocket and pulled out my chair.
"Ms. Callister," he said. "Your table."
I sat down.
The waiter came, and I ordered the lamb, and a glass of red, and a dessert I would not eat because I had made better that morning.
We talked until the room had emptied.
He told me about his mother in the Brookline wing.
He told me about the summer he learned to hate the Holloway name before he knew why.
I told him about my grandmother's cards, and the pie crust she never wrote down.
I did not think of Harrison once.
At eleven he walked me to the elevator.
It rose through the quiet hotel, floor after floor.
"Eleven-oh-four," I said.
"If you'd rather not."
"Nathaniel."
"I thought you might want to see it differently."
The door of 1104 opened onto the lamp, the bed, and the window that looked across at the Grand.
The Grand's ballroom was dark.
A new sign on its front doors said, in plain letters, that the hotel was under interim management.
