Chapter 8: Eight Days Ago

Gabriel's POV

My mother came to my door at nine that night, alone, in her pearls.

She had not been to the garage apartment once in six years.

She stood on the top step and looked at my boots by the door.

"You were outside my house today," she said. "In the truck."

"I was."

"Did you tell her where to find that phone?"

"No."

"Did you help her get it?"

I did not answer.

She took that for what it was, and her mouth thinned.

"I carried you for nine months," she said. "I raised you on a bookkeeper's salary after your father got sick. And you sit in my driveway while that girl humiliates me in front of the fund."

"You humiliated her first, Mama."

"I did what a mother does for her son."

"You wrote 'make her hear it.'"

My mother's chin lifted. She did not flinch, and she did not deny it.

That was the worst of it. She did not think she had anything to deny.

"Rafael needs this house," she said. "He's drowning. You've never once asked what it costs to keep a family from going under."

"I asked Rafael to stop borrowing three years ago. He stopped speaking to me."

"Because you called him a thief."

"I called him what he was."

She stepped past me into the room and shut the door behind her, which I had not offered.

"I need you to talk to her," she said.

"No."

"She listens to you. I saw it. I saw how she looked at you today when you stood beside her on that lawn on Tuesday."
