Chapter 14: Rule One, Sorrell
The black car came across the sedan's front bumper with a scream of rubber.
Dale slammed the brakes, and Eli's head hit the dashboard.
Laurence was out of his door before the engine stopped.
He did not run, and he did not shout.
He walked around the front of the blue sedan, wrenched open the passenger door and put his hand on Eli's shoulder.
"Are you hurt?"
"No," Eli said.
"Out. Slowly."
Eli got out.
His knees held, which surprised him.
Dale had climbed out the other side, with his hands in plain sight and a slow, unhappy smile.
"Well," he said. "Look at this. Who's this, then? Your boss?"
"No one's boss," Laurence said.
He stood a step in front of Eli, tall and still.
"You are Dale Sorrell," he said. "You are on parole, with a no-contact order."
His voice did not rise.
"You wrote to Eli this morning and put him in your car, and I watched you do it. I have your plate."
