Chapter 15: The Groom's Family

Ansel's POV

Leona made me go ahead without her.

"Sit where they'll see you," she said in the facility parking lot, with Ruth already buckled into the back of a borrowed sedan. "I'm not allowed within a mile, so you walk in first. Give them a show."

I didn't want to leave her.

I stood at the car door with my keys in my hand and did not touch her, because she hadn't asked.

She looked at my hand, and then up.

"Ask me," she said.

"May I?"

"Yes."

I kissed her once on the forehead, in front of her aunt and the man who did her aunt's taxes, and I drove the twenty-one miles to Copley Square with the windows down.

It was one-fifty-two when I walked into Trinity Church.

An usher in a gray morning coat held out a program. "Bride's side or groom's?"

"Groom's."

"Family?"

"His brother."

He looked at me, then at his list, then at me again.

"I'm sorry, sir, I didn't have a brother listed."

"No," I said. "You wouldn't have."

He put me in the third pew on the left, where the family sat, between a woman in lavender who did not turn her head and an empty space.

The woman in lavender was Clay's mother.

She had not looked at me at our father's funeral either.

I opened the program.
