Chapter 6: The Second Bedroom

The drive home took twenty minutes and nobody said one word.

Kevin drove with both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road.

Lucas sat with his jacket folded on his lap and watched the streetlights go by.

They pulled into the driveway and the gate closed behind them.

Kevin killed the engine.

"Come inside."

"I am inside."

"Get out of the car, Lucas."

Lucas got out.

The house was dark except for the kitchen light the housekeeper always left on.

Kevin went in first. Lucas followed him up the stairs.

At the top Kevin turned down the hall toward his own door.

Lucas said, "You knew."

Kevin stopped.

"You knew what he was going to say. You knew the whole time."

"I didn't know."

"You sat there."

"I sat there because it's his house."

"He toasted my career ending. In front of eleven men. In front of the men who ended it."

"I know what he did."

"Then say something."

"I'll say something to him. Not in front of the board."

Lucas laughed. It came out short.

"Not in front of the board."

"No."

"Because the board is the one thing that matters."

Kevin turned around.

"Watch it."

"Or what."

Kevin walked back down the hall and stopped a foot away.

"Or what," Lucas said again. "What are you going to do. Cut my phone in half?"

"I'll take the house off you. I'll take the car. I'll take the money out of your brother's chart."
