Chapter 16: Ask Me
Lacey's POV
Byron didn't come up the steps.
He stood in the gravel with the keys in his fist and said, "I was going to tell you Thursday."
"With the check in your pocket."
"Yes."
"So that I couldn't say no."
He didn't answer, and that was the answer.
I stood up with Poppy and went inside, and he followed me into the kitchen and shut the door against the cold.
"Four hundred and ten thousand," I said. "For the thing my daughter's grandmother is using to frighten you."
"It's my land."
"It is, and I'm not saying it isn't."
"Then what are you saying?"
"That you did it again," I said.
His face changed.
"You knew about Brady and Daphne for seven months and kept it from me, because you thought it would hurt. You sold twenty acres this afternoon and kept it from me, because you thought it would worry me. You decided what I could carry."
"I wanted you to have a week where nothing was taken from you."
"That week was the one I spent on your porch step finding out," I said.
He put his hands flat on the counter.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Ask me."
"Ask what?"
"Anything," I said. "Ask if I'm all right with it. Ask if I have an idea. I have a half interest in a house on Alder Street, Byron, and a judge who unfroze my accounts on Tuesday. I'm not a guest you're sheltering."
He looked at me.
For a long moment I watched him decide whether to be angry.
He had been angry at his mother for thirty years, and he hadn't had practice at being anything else with anyone.
