Chapter 16: Sorry Three
Daniel sat in the feed sack for an hour with the tap running behind him.
Nobody came.
At last Donna Brownie walked out of the kitchen door and turned the tap off with two fingers.
She put a pile of clothes on his lap.
"His," she said. "They'll be big."
They were big.
Daniel dressed in a flannel shirt and jeans that smelled of hay and of Johnny.
He did not count one thing while he did it.
He slept that night on a camp bed in the farmhouse parlour.
The Silver family filled the other rooms, and his grandmother snored through the wall.
At first light he went out to the carrots.
He did not take the chair.
He got down on the ground by himself, which took a long time.
He worked along the row on his knees with a trowel.
The wipe case was in his pocket.
He put his hand on it twice, and twice took the hand away.
By seven his knees were black and his palms were split.
At eight he found a worm.
He looked at it for some time, and the worm looked back.
"Hello," Daniel said, because Johnny always did.
"He'd say good morning," said Donna from the fence.
"Good morning," Daniel told the worm.
She came across the row with her hat down and a mug in each hand.
"You've done the whole bed."
"I pulled out two carrots."
"You pulled out forty weeds and two carrots, and then you put the carrots back. They'll live. They always do." She gave him a mug. "Tell me about the girl."
Daniel's coffee stopped halfway to his mouth.
