Chapter 23: Half
The paper was one page, and it had two signature lines.
"I am transferring fifty percent of my shares in Silver Ridge Company to my husband, Johnny Brownie," Daniel said to the room. "Effective today."
Nobody breathed.
Johnny, behind the chair, took a step forward and stopped.
"Daniel," he said.
"I know what you said in the hayloft."
"I said you don't pay me."
"This isn't pay. Read the next line."
Johnny leaned over his shoulder and read it, with his lips moving.
The next line said: Any decision of the company requires both signatures.
"It's not a gift," Daniel said, softly, so that only Johnny could hear. "It's a veto. You can tell me no. In front of everyone, on paper. That's what you asked for."
Johnny straightened.
The board waited. His grandmother, by the door, held her cane in both hands.
"I don't know a thing about companies," Johnny said.
"You know when a thing is growing and when it's rotten. That's most of it."
Someone at the table coughed, which became a laugh, which became a roar.
Johnny took the pen.
He signed with his whole arm, in large round letters, and underneath it he added three small dots in a row.
"Those are yours," Daniel said, hoarsely.
"They're mine now. I'm a Silver Ridge man. I'd like it in writing that I get the dots."
Daniel's mother started to cry, which she did loudly and without apology.
The board gave them a standing ovation.
It lasted a long time, and Daniel sat through all of it with his hand in Johnny's.
"One more thing," Daniel said, when it had died down.
He took something from his other pocket and put it in Johnny's palm.
