Chapter 14: No One Will Believe You

Lydia's POV

Preston walked across the yard toward me with both hands open.

He had not slept either. His tie was crooked, and he had shaved badly.

"Lyd," he said, loud enough for the drivers. "Sweetheart. You've been missing since yesterday. Judith has been calling hospitals."

"I'm not missing. I'm at work."

"You're not well."

"I own sixty percent of this yard," I said.

I had practiced it in the cab, and my voice came out steadier than I had hoped.

Forty drivers had gathered along the loading dock.

I knew a third of them by name, because my father took me to this yard every Saturday when I was twelve.

The old dispatcher with the clipboard stood closest, and he had not put his cap back on.

"Morning, Miss Conwell," he said.

"Morning. I need two minutes, and then you can all go to work."

"Lydia," Preston said quietly.

"Six months ago I was in the hospital and he had me sign a power of attorney," I said to the dock. "On Tuesday I revoked it."

A few of them shifted their feet.

"He cancelled my physical therapy in April," I said. "He told me I would never feel my legs again, and I can feel them."

Nobody made a sound.

"He took forty-one thousand dollars off my medical account to pay for a wedding. It was not his wedding to pay for. He is still married to me on a stack of papers I signed without reading."

Preston laughed softly and shook his head at the drivers.

"She doesn't remember signing," he said. "You see what I live with."

"I remember every page he stuck a note on," I said.
