Chapter 23: What He Owed
Lydia's POV
Preston held the microphone in both fists and looked out at two hundred faces.
"Listen to me," he said. "All of you. It was dark and it was raining."
The speakers gave his voice back, huge and shaking.
"The boy came over the line. Nobody could have stopped it. I had two glasses at my mother's table, two, and I wasn't over the limit, and that car was in my lane."
Nobody in the room made a sound.
He heard what he had said a moment after everyone else did.
His mouth stayed open on the next word.
"Preston," Judith said, from the head table, very sharply. "Be quiet."
"I didn't," he said. "I didn't mean."
"You said my lane," said the board chair.
"I said..."
The detective had reached the foot of the stage, and he laid one hand on the edge of it.
"Preston Aldous," he said. "Put the microphone down."
Preston did not put it down.
One of the officers climbed the three steps, and the other went around the side, and the first took the microphone out of his hand.
"You are under arrest," the detective said, "for the death of Theodore Hartigan, for leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and for tampering with evidence in a criminal case."
The cuffs were silver and heavy.
They went on his wrists with two flat clicks, and he turned to me.
"Lyd," he said. "Sweetheart. You can't let them. I did it for us."
"Don't call me that."
"You put me in the seat so you wouldn't go to prison," I said.
The sentence rang off the high ceiling.
A man at the front table stood up and started applauding.
He stopped when no one joined him, but he did not sit down.
They led Preston down the three steps and along the aisle.
