Chapter 4: Seven Days' Notice

Preston crossed the study in three steps and put his hand on the will box.

"That stays here, Lyd."

"Take your hand off it."

"It's a family matter. You're not well."

He smiled at Knox, then at his mother, then at Skylar.

His mother and Skylar nodded.

Knox stepped between my chair and the desk.

"Take your hand off the box," he said.

"This is private property," Preston said. "I don't know who you are."

"You do. You wrote me a condolence letter."

Preston's smile slipped, and it came back at once.

"Then you know my wife isn't well enough to decide anything," he said. "She can't remember the crash. She can't sign her own name without help."

"I signed everything you flagged," I said.

I picked up the divorce folder, tucked it under my arm, and turned my chair toward the door.

"Where are you going?" Judith demanded.

"To my father's lawyer."

"He's retired."

"Then it will be a short meeting."

Preston did not stop me.

He stood in the middle of my father's study with his arms folded, and Skylar stood beside him with her bracelet and her gentle face.

"The board meets Friday at ten," he said. "Come, if you want to see how it ends."

"Friday at ten," I said. "I'll be there."

Knox carried the will box down the ramp, and I rolled behind him.

We did not speak until his car was out of the drive.

"You didn't have to come in," I said.

"I wanted to hear what he'd say."

"And?"

"He didn't say anything about my brother," Knox said. "He said everything about you."
