Chapter 19: Home Visit

I went downstairs with the phone still in my hand.

Conall was at the stove with Niamh on his hip, stirring something.

He looked at my face and turned the burner off.

"Davis sent the evaluator the video," I said.

He didn't swear.

"Then she'll see it," he said. "I won't lie to her about it."

"Your pub. Is there a camera over the door?"

"There is."

"Does it keep February?"

He was quiet for a second.

"I keep everything from that night," he said. "I didn't know what I'd need it for."

"And your bartender?"

"I won't ask her, Brigid. She's been through enough on my account."

"You won't," I said. "I will."

Her sister's apartment was in Quincy, on the third floor, over a nail salon.

The bartender was twenty-three, with her hair cut short now.

I told her who I was and why I'd come at ten on a Friday night.

I told her she could say no and I'd leave.

"Conall never asked me for anything," she said. She picked up her keys. "What time?"

The evaluator came to my mother's house at ten on the dot.

She was a woman in her fifties with flat shoes and a canvas bag full of forms.
