Chapter 15: The Ring
The Black Fork Alpha was a wide, gray-bearded man.
He stood at our gate.
Six wolves fanned out behind him in the road.
The whole pack of Silver Ridge crowded the other side of the iron bars.
Adelaide sat in the truck's front seat in her white wool coat, with her burned hand in a clean glove.
She did not look at me. She looked at the lodge roof.
"Alpha Whitcombe," the Black Fork man said. He made the title sound like a joke. "I hear you're new."
"I hear you're lost," I said.
A few of my wolves laughed behind me. He did not.
"Old law," he said. "When a seat changes hands without a challenge, any Alpha on the mountain may challenge for it within seven days."
"Your Stone says you're the Whitcombe daughter. Fine. A Stone is a rock."
"Show me you can hold this territory against a wolf who isn't kneeling to you."
He raised his voice for my people.
"A woman whose wolf woke up three days ago is going to lead you through winter?"
"Mrs. Draycott came to me with her concerns," he added. "I took them seriously."
"What did she offer you?" I said.
Silence.
"The timber lease on the north slope," Conall said, very quietly, at my shoulder. "She offered him the north slope. It's the one thing my father left that she could sign."
The man shrugged.
"A fair price for a fair fight."
"I accept," I said, before Conall could speak, or Bronwyn, or anyone.
The ring was the same trampled circle at the top of the ridge.
The fire was lit again, and the snow around it was still scuffed from my own paws.
The Black Fork Alpha did not fight his own battles.
He sent a champion, a big, silent man with a shaved head and arms like fence posts, who stripped off his coat and handed it to a boy.
