Chapter 16: Forty-One Minutes
Margo's POV
I went to the galley of the CORMAC V on Wednesday afternoon, alone, with my machine in its case on my shoulder.
I did not tell Soren.
I did not tell my mother.
I told the deputy at the courthouse door that I was taking a long lunch, and he looked at the case and said, "Whatever it is, Margo, I hope you get it all down."
The towboat was tied up at the Convent landing a hundred yards below the THEODORA V.
A deckhand in a yellow slicker led me aft without speaking and left me at a steel door.
Cormac was at a table in the galley with a thermos and two heavy mugs.
The room was white steel and low light, with a calendar from a diesel supply house on the wall and a pot of something burning on the stove.
He had taken off his cap.
His white hair stood up in a ridge where the band had been.
"You came," he said.
"You asked," I said.
"I asked for Saturday."
"I'm early."
"Sit," he said.
I sat across from him.
I took the machine out of its case, set it on my knees, and opened the legs of the tripod.
He watched me do it.
"You mean to take me down," he said.
"I take everyone down," I said.
"I'm not under oath."
"I know. It's the only way I know how to listen."
He looked at the machine, and then at me, and something in his heavy face worked.
"You hold your hands like Odalys," he said. "Fingers curled, wrists low. She held a needle that way."
