I stood up.
The folding chair scraped on the planks.
I lifted my machine off the table by its tripod legs and held it against my chest in both arms.
The dock watched me do it.
"Mr. Verlander asked me to say which of us is lying," I said.
My voice was the one I use in court.
It carries to the back row of any room without rising.
"I'm not a witness. I'm the reporter. I don't say who lies. I read back what was said."
"Sit down, girl," Cormac said.
"Sheriff," I said. "I'd like the record to show where I'm reading from."
The sheriff, a slow man, looked at the deputy.
The deputy shrugged.
"Go ahead, Miss Landry," the sheriff said.
"The tape of this morning, made on this machine," I said. "A second tape made Wednesday in the galley of the CORMAC V. And my own notes from a Tuesday in my mother's kitchen."
I set my fingers on the keys, though I did not need them.
I had it by heart, in his own order.
"Tuesday, in the kitchen of Odalys Landry," I said. "Mr. Verlander: 'I'd do it to the man who bought her.' Miss Landry: 'You'd do it to my mother.' Mr. Verlander: 'I'd rather not.'"
A sound went along the planks.
"Wednesday, the galley of the CORMAC V. Mr. Verlander: 'I didn't know. I swear on the captain's grave, I didn't know.'"
Cormac's face did not change.
