Chapter 7: The Edge of the Table

Soren's POV

She came in her own car.

I heard it on the shell drive at ten past nine, a small white sedan with a bad belt.

I stood at the kitchen window with a dish towel in my hand and watched Margo Landry get out by herself.

She wore a plain gray dress and flat shoes.

Her court machine's case hung from her shoulder, and I didn't understand why until she set it on my counter.

"I came from your grandmother's," she said.

"I know," I said. "She called me before you'd reached the end of the drive."

"What did she say?" Margo asked.

"That you drink your tea black and you took notes."

She lifted her chin.

"I did take notes."

"On what?" I said.

"On everything she said." Margo looked at me straight. "I've got a new line, Soren."

"You've got a pen?" I said.

She took a feed-store receipt from her pocket, folded in four, and a pencil stub.

She wrote on the back of it in her dots and strokes and held it out.

I couldn't read it.

"Tonight I choose where," she said.

My mouth went dry.

I set down the dish towel.

"Where?"

She looked around my kitchen, the long pine table with its six chairs and the single lamp over it.

Her eyes stopped on the table.
