Chapter 22: Come In

Quinn's POV

Seven weeks after the gala, I walked into the courthouse on a walker.

It took me a long time to get from the parking lot to the elevator. Nobody hurried me. My crew friend carried my coat and said nothing, which was how I liked it.

Lena was already in the second row of courtroom two. She had left the baby with the neighbor and was wearing the green dress again.

She moved her purse off the seat beside her without looking up.

I sat. Our shoulders touched, and neither of us moved away.

Damon stood at the defense table in a gray suit that no longer fit across the shoulders.

He had pleaded guilty three weeks before, against his lawyer's advice.

Nobody in his family had come.

"Mr. Carraway," the judge said, a heavyset man with a slow voice. "You made a sworn statement to police that your wife left her home the night a man was left in a ditch."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"You knew it was false."

"Yes, sir."

"For what reason?"

Damon looked at his hands. He took a long time.

"Because my mother said it was the only way. And I let her say it, because I'd always let her."

"That is not a reason," the judge said. "That's a habit."

The courtroom was quiet.

"Twelve months, with the first six in the county jail, the remainder on supervised probation. You will not contact Ms. DeSaussure except through counsel and the court."

Damon nodded. He turned to the bailiff, and his eyes passed over the second row and kept going.

He did not look at Lena. He did not look at me.

He walked out with his hands cuffed in front of him, and it was over in less than a minute.
