Chapter 18: The Waiting Room

On Tuesday my waiting room was full, and I had only booked two children.

I stood in the doorway of my little clinic with a clipboard in my hand.

There were eleven adults on the chairs and the floor cushions.

Some of them held toddlers, and some held coffees.

The mother of the seven-year-old boy who had paused his sessions stood up first.

"Libby," she said. "I got the email."

"I know. I'm sorry if it frightened you."

"It didn't frighten me. It made me furious." She held out a folded paper. "I've brought him back. He's in the car with his tablet. He cried when I told him he couldn't see you."

My throat closed.

"He asked me why you were sick," she said. "I told him you weren't. I told him somebody was being mean."

"Thank you."

"I'm sorry I paused. I read the saint video and I believed it, and I should have asked you."

"You didn't know."

"I should have asked."

A father by the window spoke up.

"My daughter has used a pencil for the first time since you started with her," he said. "I'd sooner trust you than whoever wrote that email."

"Same," said a grandmother with a stroller.

"Same," said another voice.

I looked at them, and I had to look down at the clipboard.

The bell on the front door rang.

I knew whose step it was before I looked.

Delia came in with a paper bag from the bakery and a cardigan the color of butter.

Her hair was brushed, her face was soft, and she had the look she wore at funerals.
