Chapter 21: The Oath at the Stone

Conal's POV

The Stone stood alone on the headland, tall and grey, with the sea hitting the cliff behind it.

My father was buried forty feet from it, under a slate marker I had cut myself.

Three years ago I had stood at that grave and promised to keep to my side of the water.

Now the whole pack walked up the hill behind me, and I walked in front of it with Isla's hand in mine.

Gisela took her place at the foot of the Stone, with the registry book open on her arm.

"You have fifty minutes," she said.

"I don't need them."

"Then kneel, Mr. Cardross, and say the words."

She held out the book.

The old founder stepped between us, leaning on his cane.

"That is the Lowell oath," he said. "It was written by Gisela's grandfather. It is not the founders' oath."

"It is the oath of this pack."

"It is the oath of this house." He turned to me. "The founders' rite has its own words. I learned them from my father, and he from his. Will you hear them?"

"Yes."

He leaned close so that only I could hear, and he said them slowly, one line at a time.

They were short and plain.

I knelt on the cold turf in front of the Stone with Isla beside me.

Then I said them aloud.

"I give my name to this coast and the wolves who live on it. I keep no door shut that the pack needs open. I stand at the back of the line and the front of the fight. I answer to the Stone and to no house."
