Chapter 5: The Luncheon

Brooke invited me to lunch at the Pennell Country Club on Wednesday, "to go over the flowers," and put me at the end of a table of six women in cream cardigans.

I had not slept much since the night I found the cooler door bare.

The pink magnet was still gone.

I had checked every drawer and the floor behind the cooler, and I had asked Roz twice, and she swore she hadn't touched it.

Then I had called a locksmith, and he would come Thursday.

That left one person with a key and a reason to take a thing that said Vegas doesn't count.

I put that in my pocket with my lipstick and went to lunch anyway.

I knew it was a trap by the seat.

It was beside the swinging kitchen door.

Every time a waiter went through, the door bumped my chair.

"Everyone, this is Jenna," Brooke said brightly. "She's doing our flowers. She's also Travis's ex."

Six faces turned to me.

"It's so mature of her," Brooke added. "I told Travis, I think it's healing."

One of the women, in pearls, set down her fork.

"Was it true what he said, that you were obsessed with him?"

"I'm sorry?"

"He told Brooke you'd been calling him at night. That you showed up at his office with lilies."

"I did show up with lilies," I said. "Your friend ordered them. It was forty-two dollars."

Somebody coughed into a napkin.

Brooke laughed, high and quick.

"She's joking. Jenna's so funny."

Brooke's mother sat at the head of the table in a navy suit and a diamond brooch.

She had not spoken yet.

"Peonies," she said now. "My daughter wants peonies. In a room that big."
