Chapter 6: Third Floor
I woke up on the third floor of Lakeshore General with a monitor strapped across my belly.
The room was dark, and the clock on the wall said 3:10.
A nurse had told me what happened before I fell asleep, and I said it back to myself in the dark.
A small bleed at the edge of the placenta, caught in time.
The baby's heartbeat was strong, and I was thirty-one weeks along, on bed rest, and not allowed to stand.
Pete was asleep in the chair by the window with his tuxedo jacket over his face.
Someone else was sitting at the foot of my bed.
Ty still had his bow tie around his neck and the Cup-night patch on his chest.
He wasn't looking at his phone.
He was watching the green line of the baby's heartbeat go across the screen.
"You can leave," I said.
"I know."
"Then leave."
"The doctor said you shouldn't be alone."
"I have a brother."
"He snores," Ty said, and almost smiled, and didn't finish it.
The monitor beeped steadily between us.
He rubbed his scarred eyebrow with his thumb.
"I wasn't going to say any of it, Lena. I wasn't going to let anyone say it. My mother told me it was the only way to keep Eli safe from the press, and the league, and..."
"You could have told me in the kitchen."
"I know."
"You could have told me the day you found out."
"I know," he said, and his voice broke on it.
The baby kicked.
It was a hard kick, high on my left side, and I felt my shirt move.
Ty saw it too.
He looked at me, and he didn't ask.
"Go ahead," I said, because I was tired and it was three in the morning, and because she was his daughter.
