Chapter 14: The Cafeteria
The elevator doors opened on the lobby.
The welder and the cops were still laughing.
I stepped out and stood by a fake ficus with the phone against my ear.
"Cantrell," I said.
"Cantrell."
"Judson's father."
"Unless there's another Cantrell with a property firm and a grudge."
I looked across the lobby, through the glass doors, across the street.
The green door.
"I've got a guy reading my dad's lease tonight," Fitz said. "Come by after your shift. Don't tell the regulars yet."
The welder was standing right behind me.
"Tell the regulars what?" he said.
The Riverside cafeteria at noon was the loudest room in the building.
I got in line for soup.
Judson got in line behind me.
"I heard about the building," he said.
"I bet you did."
"I didn't hear about it. I mean I know about it." He leaned in. "Maura, I can make it go away."
I picked up a tray.
"Go away how?"
"One phone call. My dad walks. The landlord's back to square one and your bar guy keeps his bar."
"And what do you want?"
