Fitz stood there with his father's tie crooked and his hand still in mine.
"Fifteen hours," he said.
"Fifteen hours and twenty minutes."
"You counted."
"I always count."
The title office was on the ninth floor of a building on Market Street.
A conference room with a long table, bad coffee and a wall clock that ticked loud enough to hear.
At seven-thirty on Friday morning, Fitz sat on one side of the table with his lawyer and a woman from the bank.
I sat beside him in scrubs, because I had a shift at noon and no idea how long this would take.
Across the table sat Judson's father, his own lawyer and a stack of papers with a firm's name on every page.
His closing was set for nine.
Ours had to land before it.
Nobody spoke much.
The banker had a laptop open.
She checked it every minute.
At 8:05 she said, "Nothing yet."

Fitz's knee was going under the table.
