Chapter 9: The Hearthstone
The Hearthstone sits in the middle of the great hall, on a low dais of its own.
It is a block of black rock the size of a kitchen table, worn smooth in the middle by a thousand years of hands.
Nobody can lie with a palm on it.
I had learned that from Torin in the corridor, in four quick sentences, while the Regent's men waited with Cora between them.
He had come back from the King's rooms before dawn, grey in the face.
He had looked at me once, and his eyes had gone to my neck and then away.
"Later," I'd said. "We'll talk later."
"Yes."
"Torin. I don't regret it."
He had closed his eyes.
"Neither do I," he said.
Now the hall was full again, and I sat in a chair at the foot of the dais with Imogen at my side.
The Regent stood above us with his hands folded, smiling.
"Her Highness will forgive me," he said. "Miss Pell came to my attention last night. It seems she misled this court about a matter touching the princess. I thought it only just that the princess be the one to question her."
I understood him then.
He had seen the hall kneel.
He wanted me grateful.
He wanted to give me my revenge on a servant, so I would never ask for more.
"Thank you," I said. "I'd like the Stone."
His smile didn't move.
"Highness, there is no need for ceremony."
"I'd like the Stone."
Nobody in the hall breathed.
The Regent bowed his head.
"Bring it," he said.
They dragged Cora up the steps in her chains and held her hand over the black rock.
She was shaking so hard the chain rattled.
"Cora," I said. "You can say the truth or you can try to lie. It's the same to me."
"Please, I don't..."
"Put your palm down."
