Chapter 13: The Price

Rhiannon's POV

I did not answer.

I stood at the end of the long table with six hundred wolves looking at me, and I kept my mouth shut.

Ambrose waited, smiling, with one hand open toward me like a man offering a chair.

"Rhiannon," he said. "It takes a breath to say."

"I know how long it takes," I said.

"Then say it," Ambrose said.

"No," I said.

The room made a sound I had never heard a room make.

I walked down the length of the loft between the tables, with the lanterns swinging overhead and my boots loud on the planks.

I stopped beside Hester and put my hand flat on the open page.

"I'll say what I want first," I said. "Then I'll say what I'm going to do."

"Child," the chair said, "this is not a hearing."

"It's my name in the book," I said. "I'll be heard."

Nobody argued.

I had never in my life made a room wait for me, and I found that I could.

"Here's my price," I said. "Both packs can hear it."

I held up one finger.

"The note on the yard is torn up. Tonight, in front of you, by the man who bought it."

My father had half risen from the family table with his glass still in his hand.

"Rhiannon, now," he said.

"Sit down, Daddy."

He sat down.

"Two," I said. "The deck wage stays mine, at the rate every hand gets, with nobody's thumb on the scale."

Doran had not moved from the bench.

I did not look at him.

"Three. The net loft is mine outright, with the lease in my name and a stove in it by Friday."

A woman near the front laughed, short and surprised, and covered her mouth.

"Four. Every woman who has sat on the edge of the Alpha's bed this month goes home with an apology from the man who put her there."
