Chapter 16: The Boathouse
Rhiannon's POV
The boathouse lamp was lit when I came down the harbor road, and the slip door stood open an inch on the black water.
I did not knock.
He was standing in the middle of the floor with his hands at his sides and no coat on.
The oilskin hung on a nail by the door, where I could see it, as if he had wanted me to.
"I put it there on purpose," he said.
"I see that."
"I thought you'd rather know where it was."
"Take your shirt off," I said.
He did it at once, over his head, and dropped it on the boards.
I closed the side door and turned the key in the lock.
It made the same flat sound the Gaff's had.
I had not forgotten.
"No names," he said, and his mouth moved. "You said that. Last time."
"I did," I said.
"I'd like to hear you take it back."
"Not yet," I said.
I crossed the floor and stood in front of him.
The lamp lit the left side of his face and left the right in shadow.
I put both palms flat on his chest, over the old scar across the ribs.
His heart was going so hard I felt it in my wrists.
"You can't touch me," I said, "until I say."
"I know," he said.
"If you do, I stop."
"I'll not," he said.
His hands hung at his sides, and his fingers curled once and uncurled.
I watched what it took.
I kissed him.
I did it slowly, at first with only my mouth, and then with my tongue, and I felt the sound come up out of him and shake through his ribs.
He did not move his hands.
He stood there with his whole body bowed toward me, and every muscle in his arms stood out with the effort of it.
I took my mouth away.
"Rhiannon," he said, hoarse. "I'm not going to last."
"You will," I said.
"I've been wanting this for six weeks."
