Chapter 19: The Second No
Rhiannon's POV
I woke at five with his arm over me and the moon gone and the window gray.
For one moment I did not know where I was.
Then I smelled cedar, and the cold clean smell of a house that has not been lived in, and I knew.
His breath was slow and warm against the back of my neck.
He was asleep.
It was the first time in six weeks that he had slept in a bed, and he did not wake when I slid my hand down his arm.
I did not want to leave.
That was the trouble, and I looked at it plainly in the gray light.
I wanted to wake in that bed every morning, with the harbor going pink outside and the ferry's lights lined up on the water.
I wanted the long table downstairs and my mother's lamp on it and him at the other end with a mug.
The wanting scared me worse than the loft had.
He stirred.
His hand tightened on my hip, and he came awake all at once, the way a wolf does.
"Rhiannon," he said.
"I'm here," I said.
"I thought I'd dreamed it."
"You didn't."
He rolled me onto my back and looked down at me.
His hair was flat on one side, and the line had left red marks round both wrists.
