Chapter 20: Darrow

Rhiannon's POV

"You'll say nothing to him," I said.

My father squinted at me.

"I'll say what I like," he said. "He's got my yard, and I've a right."

"He doesn't have your yard. He tore up your note in front of six hundred wolves."

"The note." Darrow Etheridge waved the bottle. "The note's the least of it. There's the roof, and the insurance, and your mother's pills. Somebody's been paying, and it's not you."

I felt Doran stop behind me at exactly three feet.

He did not step forward, and he did not speak.

I knew without turning that his hands were open at his sides.

"Come to the loft," I said. "Now. All of you."

I had meant to do it quietly.

It was a Sunday morning, and the island was coming out of its doors.

I looked at the faces along the harbor road, and at my father swaying in front of them, and I changed my mind.

"No," I said. "Everyone. The fish house, in an hour."

By ten the long floor of the loft was full.

I had not asked the island to come, and it came.

The pack stood between the net racks in their church clothes, three hundred of them, and nobody spoke above a murmur.

Doran stood at the back by the stairs.

My mother sat on the bench at the front in her church cardigan with her hands in her lap.

She had come in alone.

My father stood in the middle of the floor, red-eyed and sweating, with his hands hanging.
