Chapter 4: The Bartender

The back door of the Gaff was propped open with a milk crate, and the bartender was out there smoking in the gray light.

I stopped on the step with my jacket buttoned wrong.

"Morning," the bartender said.

"Morning."

"You look like somebody hit you with a boat."

I opened my mouth to tell a lie, and nothing came.

The bartender took a drag and looked at the harbor.

"Coat on the stool last night," the bartender said. "Smelled like the Alpha's boat. I figured you knew."

I stared.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Course you don't." The bartender dropped the cigarette and stepped on it. "Salt's good for a night. It washes off in the sea air, and it wears thin in a warm room. I only pour. I don't tell anyone anything."

"Does he know it was me?"

"Hon, I wouldn't think so. He walked out of here at four with his head down like a man who'd lost a fight with his own feet." The bartender turned and went inside. "You want coffee, there's a pot."

I did not want coffee.

I walked out onto the dock with the wind coming off the water and my whole body humming.

I had taken the Alpha of Shackleford Reach to bed.

I had told him to sit down, and he sat.
