Chapter 11: Torin Holds the Gate

Torin's POV

She came out of the pack house at a dead run, barefoot, with her coat open.

I had never seen anyone move that fast on two legs.

"The pups," she said, and she was already pulling at the truck door. "Rhoda's sent a team to the infirmary. Drive."

I drove.

I took the ridge road at eighty, through three bends that should have put us in the trees, with Morven braced against the dash and her eyes fixed on the road.

They were gold, and I could not stop noticing it.

"My Beta isn't answering," I said.

"Try again."

"I've tried five times."

"Then they're already there."

I reached for my second, and my third, and the pack-link opened and filled with static, and under the static a snarl, and I knew.

They had gone in through the bridge while every Ironwood wolf who could fight was out at the harvest bonfire.

I had left the infirmary with two guards.

I had done that on purpose, to look calm.

I had never hated myself more.

"How many?" Morven asked.

"I don't know."

"Torin, how many?"

"Six, maybe eight."

She nodded.

She said, to the air, "Ember, can you give me everything?"

I did not hear the answer.

I felt it.

It rolled across the cab of the truck, hot and heavy.

We came down the last hill with the lights off.

The infirmary was a low shape in the dark, with its windows lit.

Eight men in black stood in a half ring around the porch, with a van pulled up on the grass.

Two of my guards were lying on the ground.

They were breathing.

The healer stood in the doorway, a woman of sixty with a fireplace poker in her hands and the housekeeper at her shoulder.
