Chapter 23: Neither

Benton tried one more thing before they took him out.

He turned to the ballroom and spread his hands.

"You've heard one side," he said. "She's unwell. Her father's confused. I have a family to protect."

Brianna was still on the stage steps with the phone in her fist.

"Which family?" she said.

He looked at her.

"Brianna, sweetheart."

"I'm not your sweetheart. I'm a witness." She held up the phone. "You told me the baby was a problem to manage."

Someone at table four said, loudly, "Shame."

Then someone else did.

Then the whole room was saying it, low and steady, three hundred voices, and Benton stood in the middle of the stage and heard it.

Two guards took his arms.

He did not fight them.

He went down the steps, through the guests, with his chin up and his tuxedo wrinkled, and nobody moved to let him by.

At the doors he stopped and looked back once.

I think he was looking for Brianna.

She was holding Rosemary's hand, and she turned her face away.

The doors closed.

By eleven the ballroom was empty.

The caterers had gone, and the band, and the last photographer.

Rosemary had taken Brianna home in a cab with the leftover roses.

The white tables stood in rows under the chandeliers, and I walked through them in my mother's dress with my shoes in my hand.

Cosimo was waiting at the edge of the dance floor.

He had taken off his jacket and rolled his sleeves.

"He's gone?" I said.

"He's in a cab on his way to a friend's couch. He used to have an apartment, but I bought the lease at four o'clock." Cosimo shrugged. "It seemed efficient."
