Chapter 18: Not a Weapon
Abby's POV
On Friday night Bea carried a dress bag through my father's front door and held it behind her back.
"Don't look," she said. "It's a surprise."
"I'm going to look."
"It's green. It's got a back. That's all you get."
She hung it on the hook behind the kitchen door and pointed at me with the bat.
"I'm borrowing a car from a guy at the bar who owes me. It's not the Mustang. It's a gray sedan with a bad radio, and you'll sit in the back like the queen of England."
"Bea."
"Don't cry on me. I just did my eyeliner."
The doorbell rang.
We both looked at it.
"I'll be in the basement," said Bea. "Sorting your father's tools. Loudly."
I opened the door.
Rory stood on the stoop in his navy jacket, straight from a shift, with a paper bag of Chinese food in one hand and his phone in the other.
He held up the phone.
"Facts," he said. "I'm sorry."
"Come in."
"I'd like to say it on the porch first."
"Why?"
"Because I'm not sure you'll let me in after."
I stepped back and held the door.
He came in, and I took the bag from him and put it on the hall table.
"I said something in the truck that I shouldn't have," I said. "I said it because I was angry at her, and it landed on you."
"It was true."
"It was partly true, and I said it about all of you."
He looked at me.
"Ten years you paid," I said. "And on Thursday you told her no, to her face, in your mother's kitchen. Both things are facts."
He nodded slowly.
"I'd like to say something else," he said. "Can I do it before we eat?"
"Go ahead."
"Daphne's photo is going out. She'll post it before Saturday, and she'll throw it again at the dinner when the cameras are on." His voice was even. "People will say you slept with the brother and cooked up a revenge."
