Chapter 28: Sunday at Cormac's
On Sunday Cormac made her put on a clean shirt.
"I'm not dressing for him," Maura said.
"Nobody said anything about him," said Cormac. "You've got sauce on the old one."
The third-floor flat smelled of onions and burned toast.
Finn had eaten two breakfasts and was still hungry.
He sat on the kitchen floor with Nico, building a road out of cereal boxes for the fire truck.
The truck was still in its wrapping paper from the party.
Nico had unwrapped one corner at a time.
"It's got a ladder," Nico told Finn.
"I know. I saw it. It's got a siren."
"It doesn't have batteries."
"Uncle Cormac has batteries."
"Uncle Cormac has everything," said Cormac from the stove. "Uncle Cormac also has a mortgage, so if either of you wants to go into the electrical trade, now's the time."
Both boys looked at him.
"What's a mortgage?" said Finn.
"A very large cannoli I owe a bank."
Maura laughed before she could stop it.
The sound surprised her, and she saw Cormac's shoulders come down.
The buzzer rang at noon.
She had decided she wouldn't go to the door, and she went.
Vincent stood on the landing with a white bakery box in one hand and a paper sack in the other.
He wore a plain dark sweater.
His bandages were fresh, and he had shaved badly.
"I brought lunch," he said. "I can't carry the bags properly. I had the man tie the box."
"Come in."
He stood on the mat until she stepped aside.
He looked past her, into the flat, and stopped.
Finn was sitting up very straight on the kitchen floor with the fire truck in his lap.
