Chapter 30: Ask Me Properly
By April Vincent had come to Sunday lunch every week and had never once asked for anything.
He fixed the leaking tap in the new house with hands that had healed pink and shiny.
He took a job on a Dorchester loading dock, and came home with sawdust in his hair and a bad temper about forklifts.
He picked Finn up from kindergarten on Tuesdays, standing among the mothers in his work boots, and Finn ran to him now.
He slept on Cormac's couch when the boys had a bad night, and he left before breakfast.
He never touched her.
On the last Saturday of the month, Cormac took both boys to a Red Sox game and said he'd be back "when it's dark, or when they're sick, whichever is worse."
Maura stood in the doorway of the little kitchen at four o'clock and watched Vincent put the last clean plate in the rack.
"Stay," she said.
He turned around with the dish towel in his fist.
"For dinner?"
"No."
His eyes dropped to her mouth and came back up.
"Maura."
"I'm asking. You said you wouldn't. So I am."
She crossed the kitchen and took the towel out of his hand and dropped it.
She put her palms flat on his chest.
His heart was going hard under her hands.
"Say it," she said.
"I want you."
"Louder."
"I want you," he said, and his voice cracked in the middle. "God, Maura. I have wanted you every day."
She pulled his head down and kissed him.
It was nothing like the first night or the second.
It was slow, and it was hungry, and he shook all through it.
He backed her into the kitchen wall and she heard a picture frame drop somewhere.
