Chapter 5: The Drive

Vincent was parked across from the funeral home, with his window down and his bandaged hand on the wheel.

Maura saw him from the doorway and stopped.

Behind her, Cormac muttered something about hitting him with a car instead of a wrench.

"I'm going to ride with him," she said.

"Mo."

"Follow us. Stay two cars back. If I raise my hand, you call someone."

"Who would I call?"

"Anyone who isn't named Saraceno."

She crossed the street and got into the passenger seat before she could change her mind.

Vincent did not say hello.

He took the paper she held out and read it twice.

When he reached the time stamp, his thumb stopped on the page.

"Saturday, one thirty-five," he said.

"Ninety minutes before anyone went in."

"I know what the fire report says."

"Then you know what this means."

"It means somebody was told what was in that building before the fire department knew." His voice was even. "And my father signed his name under it."

He gave the paper back to her and turned the key.

His hand shook on the wheel.

It was a small tremor, and he hid it by tightening his grip.

She saw it anyway, and she looked out the window so he would not see her see it.

They drove through Dorchester with the heater on.

Neither of them spoke until the second red light.

"Where am I taking you?" Vincent asked.
