Chapter 14: Unfit
The photographs came on Tuesday afternoon, in a cream envelope with my clinic's address typed on the front.
Elliot brought them to the apartment himself.
He stood in Yvette's doorway with the envelope in one hand and a second, thinner one in the other.
"The board chair forwarded these to me an hour ago," he said. "Yours is the copy that went to your lawyer. Dalton's attorney sent it to both."
Yvette took the envelope out of my hand and spread the prints across the kitchen table.
There were nine of them.
In the first, Elliot had his hand on my wrist in the ER hallway, and my face was turned up to his.
In the second, I was getting out of his car in front of my building in the dark.
In the third, he was carrying Biscuit's carrier up the stairs.
Every one of them had been cropped.
None showed Yvette, or Posy, or the nurses standing three feet away.
"It's an affair," Yvette said flatly. "That's what it's supposed to be. Two Lowells, a pregnant girlfriend, a big sad brother."
"It's meant for Dalton's lawyer to hand a judge," Elliot said. "A mother who sleeps around is an unfit mother. The board gets a second copy so I'm a CEO with a conflict."
"Is it working?"
"The chair asked me whether I intend to step aside."
"What did you say?"
"I said I'd think." He looked at me. "I thought about it on the way over."
Posy stood in the bedroom doorway in Yvette's oversize sweatshirt, holding a cracker.
She did not say anything.
Yvette looked at her, then at the two of us, and said, "I'm going to find out what's wrong with Posy's ankles. In the other room. For a long time."
