Chapter 16: Full Moon
The full moon came up orange over the river.
Every family in Hollowmere stood on the green with a lantern.
Martha was at my left shoulder, in her good wool coat, and Gillian was at my right with her fists in her pockets.
I had not slept.
I had washed and dressed, and I wore the pale dress again, because I wanted the Stone to see it.
Orson walked out of the dark alone.
He had shaved, and his jacket hung loose on him.
He did not look at the crowd.
He looked at me, and I looked back, and nothing was said.
Odile came after him in her grey coat, with her gloves on, and the four signing families walked behind her in a line.
She stepped onto the granite first.
"We are here to witness a choosing of the house," she said, in her pleasant carrying voice. "The elder stands with the chooser. I stand with my son."
"Your son is unfit to speak," said a man from one of the signing families. "We said so in writing."
A low murmur went around the lanterns.
I stepped forward onto the grass at the foot of the Stone.
"Who is being chosen here?" I said.
Nobody answered.
"I am. I'm the only one who can say no, and I haven't been asked." I looked at the man. "Did your letter have my name on it?"
"No."
"Then it's a letter."
The keeper of the Stone hall shuffled out of the crowd in his brown coat, with his hat clamped under his arm.
"She's right," he said, loudly, for him. "The ledger is plain. Any founding man may stand at the Stone, and the woman alone may answer. No family can forbid it."
