Chapter 7: The Hearing
The hearing was held in the hospital auditorium, because two hundred people had asked to come.
Doctors sat in the front rows in their white coats.
Nurses stood along the side walls, still in scrubs, on their breaks.
At the back, a man from the local paper held a notebook on his knee.
I sat in the second row between Bev and a woman I did not know, who leaned over and whispered, "Good luck, honey."
The board chair opened the session and read the item aloud.
"To consider the naming of the Ainsley Heart Pavilion and the Ainsley Fellowship, in light of a donor's withdrawal."
Curtis sat at a table on the stage with his lawyer.
Kendra sat at the next table, in a navy suit with her hair pinned back, holding a binder against her chest.
Dr. Hendry sat at the end of the board's long table, saying nothing, with a legal pad in front of him.
Kendra spoke first.
She stood at the lectern and was good at it.
She talked about the foundation's mission and about Curtis's twenty years of service, and she talked about gratitude.
"The Ainsley name was chosen with the full consent of the family," she said. "Dr. Ainsley made this gift in honor of his late father and his mother, who is with us today."
She turned toward the audience and Rosalind, in the third row, touched her pearls.
"A small gift to the community from a loving son," Kendra said.
I stood up.
"May I ask a question?"
"Mrs. Tolbert, you'll have your time," the chair said.
"It's about that sentence."
The chair looked at Dr. Hendry.
He gave the smallest nod.
"Go ahead."
I walked up the aisle with the signed agreement in my hand and stopped at the foot of the stage.
