Chapter 8: Parking Lot
I went out through the side doors and into the parking structure, because I could not stay in that room another minute.
The ramp smelled of rain and exhaust.
I stood at the concrete wall with my folder pressed against my ribs and breathed.
"Mo."
Curtis had come after me, without his lawyer.
His tie was loose, and his hair had come out of its part.
He looked like the young man who used to wait outside my night classes with a paper bag of fries.
"Please," he said. "Five minutes."
"You've had twenty years of minutes."
"I know what I did."
"Do you?"
"I do." He pressed the heel of his hand against his eye. "I was a coward. I was scared of becoming my father, I was scared of Mother, I let Kendra turn my head. It's over with her. It's been over since Wednesday. Mo, we're twenty years."
"You put me by the warming racks."
"I was drunk on being congratulated."
"You'd had one glass of wine. I counted them."
He laughed once, with no breath in it.
"You counted."
"I count everything. It's how I built what you wanted to take half of."
"I don't want half," he said. "I want my wife."
He reached for my hand.
I let him take it, for about two seconds, so I would know what it felt like.
It felt like nothing at all.
I took it back.
"You filed for divorce the day before the gala," I said. "That wasn't drunk, Curtis. That was planned."
His face changed.
"That was my lawyer's idea."
"Your lawyer is a man you pay, and you told him what to write."
"You don't understand."
"I understand fine."
